CNN —Australian police shot dead a teenage boy after he stabbed an injured a man in an attack that had the “hallmarks” of terror, authorities said. The teenager, described as a 16-year-old Caucasian male, was armed with a knife when he carried out the attack in a suburb of Perth, Western Australia (WA) Premier Roger Cook said. When the officers arrived at the scene, they were confronted by the teen, who was alone and holding a “large kitchen knife,” Blanch said. Two tasers were deployed and when they failed to subdue him, the third officer “fired a single shot and fatally wounded the male,” Blanch continued. Police discovered after the shooting that the teen had stabbed and injured a middle aged man prior to his confrontation with the police.

The police in Perth, Australia, fatally shot a 16-year-old boy who had stabbed a man in a parking lot and who officials said had been on their radar for suspicion of having extremist tendencies. Members of the public had also alerted the police that the teenager was wielding a knife, and officers were dispatched to the scene. A mass stabbing in a shopping mall in Sydney killed six people and injured at least a dozen on April 13. On Saturday in Perth, the two officers who arrived to confront the teenager drew their tasers and a firearm, Commissioner Blanch said. They tried to convince him to drop his knife, but he did not comply and rushed at one of the officers.

CNN —Rafael Nadal said that he is trying to enjoy each moment he gets on a tennis court as he looks to extend his career while battling ongoing injury issues. Speaking to reporters ahead of the Madrid Open, Nadal – who has played only five matches this year – was doubtful about whether he will compete at next month’s French Open, a tournament he has won a record 14 times. Prior to that, he suffered a third-round exit at the Brisbane International in January before withdrawing from the Australian Open. He has won five titles at the Madrid Open, the last coming in 2017. “I’m going to be on court tomorrow,” he added.

Merchan didn't hit Blanche as hard as a federal judge in Manhattan has hit Trump lawyer Alina Habba for her lawyering. During the E. Jean Carroll defamation trial in January, Judge Lewis Kaplan bench-slapped Habba 14 times during a single day of testimony. "Please direct me to the portion of the original gag order, or the subsequent gag order, where it makes any exception if Mr. Trump feels he is under attack. The judge told Blanche to file a response, in writing, explaining why Trump should not be held in contempt for violating the gag order. The judge paused, then added, with some sarcasm, "I don't recall inserting that anywhere in either gag order."

A Dinner Party So Easy You Don’t Even Need Recipes

For the main course, cauliflower cheese, a British comfort-food classic, you really don’t need a recipe. Again, it’s the technique you need, specifically making a white sauce (béchamel). Coat the cauliflower in sauce, shower with whatever kind of cheese you like and bake until golden and bubbling. The “recipe” is quite forgiving, and because cauliflower cheese can often be a bit bland, I added a sprinkling of cumin seeds and a touch of ground cayenne. Baked cauliflower for dinner on its own is lovely, but it can also be a vegetable accompaniment, say, for roast chicken (which, dare I say, you could even make without a recipe).

Goldman Sachs warns US energy policy is backfiring

New York CNN Business —America’s emergency oil stockpile has plunged to 40-year lows. It has less levers left in its policy toolkit,” Daan Struyven, head of oil research at Goldman Sachs, told CNN in a phone interview. That’s one reason Goldman Sachs expects oil prices to stay high, averaging $100 a barrel this time next year. Saudi Arabia has an incentive to keep oil prices high in order to balance their budget. “Extremely high prices destroy long-term demand for Saudi barrels,” Struyven said.

In an aerial view, oil storage tanks are shown at the Enterprise Sealy Station on August 28, 2023 in Sealy, Texas. Oil prices climbed to their highest level of the year this week, extending a rally that has put a return to $100 a barrel sharply into focus. Indeed, some analysts believe crude prices could hit this milestone before year-end. Analysts at Bank of America have indicated they now believe oil prices could soon spike beyond triple digits. "Should OPEC+ maintain the ongoing supply cuts through year-end against Asia's positive demand backdrop, we now believe Brent prices could spike past $100/bbl before 2024," analysts led by Francisco Blanch said Tuesday in a research note.

The two-day jump in gasoline prices — the biggest in a year — is combining with a rally in wheat and other agricultural commodities. All told, gas prices have spiked 9 cents in 48 hours. Lower gas prices have been central to progress on slowing price increases. The IMF warned on Tuesday that grain prices could rise by 10% to 15% because of the collapse of the grain deal. Yawger noted that soybean futures have also climbed sharply amid concerns about high heat hurting crops in the United States.

MADRID, July 11 (Reuters) - Spanish opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo, leader of the conservative People's Party (PP), won an ill-tempered televised debate on Monday night ahead of an election later this month, a poll published by El Mundo newspaper indicated on Tuesday. With Feijoo leading in polls before the July 23 election, the onus was on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, a Socialist, to go on the attack. About 54% of voters thought Feijoo won the debate compared to 46% for Sanchez, according to the Sigma Dos survey for El Mundo. It found that 22% of people who voted for the Socialists in the past election felt Feijoo had won the debate while only 6% of PP voters assigned the victory to Sanchez. The expectation is that the election at the height of the summer holiday season will also suffer from a lack of engagement.

Confirmation of a likely genetic cause for the children’s deaths has implications far beyond Australia for parents who have been accused of killing or harming their babies. The advances in genetic testing used to free Folbigg are giving other families hope that science may explain why their children have died, but experts say sometimes even that can’t exonerate parents – often mothers – accused of harming them. How the science is helping othersOne of the lead authors of the study, Professor Carola Vinuesa, says that Folbigg’s case has encouraged other families and lawyers to come forward, seeking genetic evidence to clear mothers accused of harming their babies. Some mothers accused of injuring their children are seeking a genetic explanation for their symptoms to counter claims of child abuse, she said. “The majority of these mothers have not harmed their children, but the children have these very rare conditions.

Oil prices will remain under pressure until the Fed eases up on monetary tightening, Bank of America said. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is trying to boost oil prices by cutting production. Energy markets are facing a "battle royale" between the top oil exporter and the Federal Reserve. In a note last week, BofA commodities strategist Francisco Blanch pointed to the downward trend in oil prices compared to last summer, when oil hit triple digits. Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia announced a production cut of 1 million barrels per day starting in July, piling onto prior cuts from earlier this year.

Oil edges lower ahead of Fed meeting

SINGAPORE, June 12 (Reuters) - Oil prices edged lower on Monday ahead of a Federal Reserve meeting as investors try to gauge the central bank's appetite for further rate hikes, while concerns about China's fuel demand growth and rising Russian crude supply weighed on the market. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was at $69.93 a barrel, down 24 cents, or 0.3%. "The bearish allocators will maintain the upper hand for now, as oil prices struggle to rally until the Fed eases money supply," Blanch said. Goldman Sachs cut its oil price forecasts on higher-than-expected supplies from Russia and Iran and raised 2024 supply forecasts for the two producers and Venezuela by a total 800,000 bpd. The bank's December crude price forecast now stands at $86 a barrel for Brent, down from $95, and at $81 a barrel for WTI, down from $89.

SYDNEY, March 4 (Reuters) - A joint U.S. and Australian law enforcement operation busted an international drug ring after intercepting 2.4 tonnes of cocaine aboard a vessel off the coast of South America that had been bound for Australia. Western Australian police substituted the cargo with identically packed fake cocaine and dropped it roughly 40 nautical miles west of state capital Perth on Dec. 28. Three suspected members of the "Australian arm of a drug syndicate" with 1.2 tonnes of fake cocaine were arrested on Dec. 30, after allegedly making three trips out through rough seas to collect the packages. Hailing the success of "Operation Beech" Western Australia police commissioner Col Blanch in a statement: "The operation sends a message to international drug traffickers – your deadly drugs are not welcome here." You need to know what you think will happen and then you can insert stocks into that worldview. I think this view, which Jay cares and is most likely going to get it right, is fundamental to my worldview. I think that's an absurd tradeoff and those who are making it, those who own 10-year Treasurys, are sorely ill-advised. Fortunately, I don't think the Fed has to go that far to break the trio. The companies you think might not make it I think aren't going to make it because they won't be able to raise cash.
